IKEA Reflection
- On a scale from 1 to 5 (1=easy and 5=difficult) how difficult was this assignment?
2. Please explain why you choose this number.
We have to explain all directions by using only word. It was hard to wrote that more easily to understand.
3. How and why did you pick the furniture manual that you did? Were there other manuals that you considered? Why not them?
It was no to much step and use a few product to create, so it was easy to explain. There are 2 types of table, circle one and square one. we choose circle one because square types of table manual was combined other furniture direction, so that was little bit complicated.
4. What was the most challenging step to explain in your directions? Why?
Step 2 was most challenging. At first, we wrote just "up side down". We realized only the phrases gives meaning of "people" going to up side down. That was misunderstanding. After we explained about the base part, our direction became more clearly.
5. What do you feel was easier to do in text than in the picture when you wrote out the directions?
I think picture is easy to get image but sometimes miss some information. However text was more easier to explain all specific information what we need.
6. Do you think directions such as these are best in text (symbolic), picture (iconic)?
I prefer to picture because those manuals are seen by people all arounds the world. If it translate in all languages, it takes a lot of time and might be confuse depends on the country. Picture is most simple and fast way to give the image of direction.
7. If you were to combine both the text (symbolic) and icon (picture) do you think this would help or confuse the communication of directions?
I think it confuse. Text gives deferent meanings depends on the country, not universal. Also, if combine them, direction going to be complicate.
8. Think of something in everyday life that you would like to learn. Do you think you could use icon (picture) based directions like the IKEA manuals to learn this. Why or why not?
Yes I think. Picture can gives more clear image of directions and picture directions can understand faster than text. For example, in case of emergency on the airplane or train, almost all evacuation directions use picture. It's help to understand faster and save misunderstanding.
9. Final thoughts, what situations do you feel icon directions work better than symbolic? And symbolic better than icon?
As I mentioned before, in emergency situations, icon directions work better than symbolic because it can gives image more faster. For others, icon directions is helpful for the situation of make or create somethings like IKEA furniture.
